Chili Cook Off 2008

19th Annual Chili Cook-off, C.A.R.S Show, Volleyball Tournament, Arts and Crafts
and Fireman’s Challenge event.
(Oh heck it was just a big ole party)
Brought to us by CD104.
With temperatures reaching well into the triple digits (some claimed well over 200 degrees) It was HOT and the weather did not help any.  The cooks were slaving to make this one of the best chili cook offs yet.

As the smell of 15 different types of chili filled the air the C.A.R.S. entry’s glittered in the sun.  There was a variety of beauty to look at.  From the 1934 Ford  three window Coup and the 1968 Volkswagen Beetle to a new Thunderbird.  With all that beautiful Chrome, classic curves, raw power and modern custom changes to admire it was hard to imaging there was anything else to see.

But there was.
In the parking lot there were firemen, so many firemen.  Firefighters from all around the country, places like Norman Oklahoma, El Paso Texas, Holloman Air Force Base, San Angelo Fire Training Academy Texas, Rincon Valley Fire Arizona, Bernalillo County New Mexico Hudson Bend Texas, Cedar Park Texas, Fort Bliss Texas, Haverhill Mass, Las Cruses NM, as well as our own guys from Carlsbad were here to enjoy our town and participate in the 2nd annual Scott’s Fireman’s Challenge.  With sponsors like State Farm Insurance, PBRTC, Globe Boots, Cutters Edge Rescue Saws, Carlsbad Medical Center, Kidde
Fire Safety it was a great event.  How those guys do what they do in that heat in all those clothes I do not know.
Off in the Grass there was a Kids version of the firemen’s challenge as well as a Volleyball tournament going on.  Then it was back through the cars to the chili.

It was a busy day not only for those cooking, showing their cars, running the challenge and playing volleyball but for all those who attended.  This is what community is all about.  Getting together in the summer sun and enjoying the day.  Hope you were able to make it ... if not enjoy the photos and pretend you were there.
