You could hear them in the truck. The hundreds of little duckies calling to be released to the water that was so close…quack quack quack. The people on the bridge were sympatric and began to chant with one voice for the release of the gate … Duckie! Duckie!! Duckie!!! The large ducks with the volunteer human leaders were in the water, poised to lead the little duckies to the safety of the finish line. The whistle sounds and the larger ducks are off swimming. But these are not the sweet little duck we would like to think they are, with their bright eyes and smiling bills. The riders must be careful for they are untamed and wild ducks. They can, and will if given the chance, buck you off or take you under with them, as one rider found out the hard way. Getting dunked in the cold water of the canal he was not able to wrangle the duck back under control and did not make the finish line as his duck was untamable .
Then there is silence while the truck starts…the little ducks get louder as they know that the time is near for their time in the water, the truck bed starts to lift and the gate starts to open, the first little duckie finds the opening and OHHHH sweet release as he coasts down the ramp to the cool water below. Suddenly in a rush of yellow all the little ducks converge on the opening and find their way to the water…SPLASH! Off they go to follow the larger ducks to the finish line.
